The island of Vallisaari is a combination of green forests, great views over the Baltic Sea and interesting history. Vallisaari is a former military island. In particular, the island grew in importance in the 1800s, in the Russian era. Most of the fortifications and constructions on the island date back to the late 1800s. After the Finnish independence, the island served the Finnish military. During its last decades as a military island, Vallisaari was no longer actively used by the Finnish military, which had unexpected yet positive implications on the island: nowadays, Vallisaari offers a green, tranquil environment for visitors to enjoy. The military past is present in the form of fortifications and interesting stories about the historical events that the island has been part of.
