After the fortress surrendered to the Russians in 1808, Suomenlinna became a part of Russia along with the rest of Finland. The fortress became more of a garrison town than a defensive fortress. This 110-year-long period was very eventful with grand parties, wealthy merchants, the construction of the Nevski church, the bombardment of the fortress during the Crimean War, and the dramatic rebellion of Suomenlinna in 1906.
